Do you have a basketball nickname?

They used to call me 20/20 because I don’t play with my glasses on. I am always squinting. So, they thought it was a cool double entendre. Normally, it is just Madi, but Nelia calls me Mads.

Sidebar: Ummmn, I had to look up the term double entendre. According to Siri, a double entendre is “wording that is devised to be understood in two ways.”

Out of all the things you could be doing with your time, why play basketball?

My mom put a basketball in my hand when I was young. I have been playing since grade school. It was an outlet when things weren’t going right. It was a way to focus on something else. It is a good stress reliever.

What do you see your role on the team?

Energy. I might not be the best offensive player, but I like to push other people and bring energy defensively. When I know I am not bringing what I can offensively, I can harass the ball and get turnovers and make plays and make someone else feel good about what they just did.

What does life after high school basketball look like to you?

I want to try to get a scholarship somewhere, but if I can’t, I am going to go to college for chemical engineering.

Any school or region of the country that you are interested in?

I don’t want to be too far, but I don’t want to be in the back yard either. Michigan (Ann Arbor) they have a really good science program.

Sidebar: I know I made a face, but I thought she wouldn’t see my reaction because I was wearing a mask. My eyes must have given it away.

I know. I know. I just applied there. I won’t hear back until January. That is my number one pick right now. If not, Michigan State, I am thinking OU (Ohio University). Something that is not too far, but something that I can drive back.

Activities/Hobbies?

I am kind of a nerd. I like to read and do word searches, and sudoku. I like to binge watch shows. I don’t get out much. I am not a party person.

Sudoku anyone?, Madison “Madi” O’Neill

What is sudoku?

It’s a numbers game. It’s like cross word for numbers. You get boxes that have numbers in them, and you have to fill in the remaining boxes. It is like an algorithm. The same number can not be the same boxes.
