Sidebar: Day one at the Arnold Sports Festival I ran into Debra Googins. She was the “hype person” for Sarah Cappelow as she competed.

How did you get involved in the Highland Games?
I have been doing the Highland Games for 3 years. I got started because of whisky and questionable life choices.
How do you train for this?
A lot of weightlifting and throwing heavy stuff. It is a lot of technique. You have to learn how to move heavy things with the least amount of resistance.
Do you have all the equipment at your house?
I do. I even have the standard bars in my yard.
It looks like I have bumped into a ringer. Do you live in the country? Are your neighbors angry with you?
No. I live on an acre about 2 miles from the beach in Maine. My husband is a lobsterman and he supports my crazy.

Is there anything that I didn’t ask you that you think I should have asked you? If so, go ahead and answer that question.
I had absolutely no throwing experience. I was not a shot putter. I got on a field at 51 years old and made it here in 3 years. I will be going to the World Championships in June.
Sidebar: I had to pause to give her a high five.
I also competed with a broken rib today.
Sidebar: That’s dedication! That’s a level of rough many don’t have… Throwing heavy stuff; for example, a 60-pound caber with a broken rib….
You are nail tough.
Well, I’m a little rugged.
