I talked to Carole Walker at Summer Jam West 2022.

Tell me about your music journey.
I have been playing and doing singer song writer stuff; but, I had a stronger edge when it came to how women (especially black women) need to express themselves. I don’t like to be put into a box, like you are soul or a backup singer. What is more rock and roll than a black woman trying to do her thing in 2022 under these circumstances?
Did you say you have been doing this for a while?
Yes, I am in the plus fifty club. I started right after high school. I have been touring around. I am originally from Cincinnati. I have been in Columbus for about seventeen years.
Is this what you do for a living?
Yes. I have a couple of balls in the air. I play with this band, I play with another band, I play as a solo performer, I play with a duet and I sometimes pick up a part time gig when I can.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
The most important thing for artists is to be able to grow and be able to take people on that journey with you. I feel like it is ok to sing about every emotion, not just the highlights or the low emotions. Sometimes, there are a lot of things that intersect. You are just trying to find your best self. You make mistakes. You need forgiveness and you look for grace. Sometimes, you have a little fun. Sometimes, you have people that totally uplift you. My songs talk about that journey.

Is there anything that I didn’t ask you that you think I should have asked you? If so, go ahead and answer that question.
The most important thing when it comes to music going forward is fear no music. People look for music many different ways. We are going to be putting out a YouTube channel where you will be able to see our live shows, as well as many of our processes when it comes to recording and writing. Music is about trying to connect with people. There are so many ways to connect. We are here for those people who want to find a connection.
