I talked to Breshea Anglen at the Ohioana Book Festival.

Tell me about your book and why you wrote it.

If I didn’t write the book, I don’t know what else I would do. Writing is so deeply engrained in me, that it would keep me up at night every night if I wasn’t getting this out there, if I wasn’t sharing this art. It is almost like I have to get it out of my body. Once I do that, I feel good and accomplished. I couldn’t sleep if I couldn’t write. It is like breathing.

Is your book self-published?

Yes. The first version of the book was published through Archway Publishing, which is like a hybrid self-publishing company. I like the work that they did; but, I wanted a cover that was more representative of my story. My book is black fantasy and I want everyone to know that. I need people to see that my characters are black and brown people. I got my cover redone. It takes a part of you to write a book and you need to be able to represent that part beautifully. If it isn’t done well, you got to do it yourself.

Tell us a little about the book.

The book is young adult fantasy. It is a prequel and a sequel. The first book is about a girl named Noni Grace. She is eighteen and on the day of her high school graduation she gets into a near fatal accident. When she wakes up from the two-week coma, she wanted to find the man who saved her life. When she finds him, people start coming after her. She is trying to figure out if they are coming after her because there is something special about her or something about this man that just entered her life. When she finds out she is special and has all these powers, it becomes a matter of how are you going to use them? How are you going to protect your family from these people that are after you? That leads into the second book where they leave earth and go to a different realm.
